Chandana Mani Vathil - Marikunilla Njan

Film – Marikunilla Njan

Music – Ravindran

Lyrics – Ezhacheri Ramachandran

Singer – G Venugopal

Prelude – Chandana Mani Vathil is a song first mentioned to me by my classmate Deepak in 12th standard when he wrote in my autograph book with a violet glitter pen . I had never heard this song until he mentioned it . I never had an idea that apart from being sound in technical fields , this guy has a lyrical heart . I was intrigued by the tune of the song and the strumming of the violin , producing the aura and mystery of night . The song is composed in raag Hindolam which brings forth the tranquility and mysteriousness of the night .

Chandanamani vathil pathi chari hindolam kannil thira ilakki

You stand behind the half-closed , sandalwood, bell - adorned door with the raag Hindolam surging in your eyes like the waves in the sea .

Shringara chandrike neeradi nee nilke enthayirunnu manassil

What was in your mind when you were adorned like the moonlight after taking a bath ?

Ennodu enthinu olikunnu nee sakhi ellam namukku oru pole elle

Why do you hide from me , my beloved ? Aren't both happiness and sorrow to be shared by us equally ?

Anthyamathile manjettu pookumi swarna mandarangal sakshi elle

Isn’t our love a testimony to the blossoming , dew - kissed golden flowers when the night transcends to dawn ?

Nanam puthu vidarna lavanyame yamini kama sugandhi elle

Your blush blooms into beauty , and the night is scented by the fragrance of desire .

Maya viralukal thottal malarunna madaka mounangal nammal elle

Aren't we not the intoxicating silence that blossoms when I touch your illusionary fingers?

Postlude – The modesty of a woman has been explored by many lyricists. Ezacheri Ramachandran has compared the coyness of a woman to the moonlit night and the blossoming of flowers.  The moon , dew - kissed flowers , and the silence of the night add magic to nature . Maybe someday we should take a break and explore nature, gazing at the stars and the moon. We can smell all the white flowers that bloom ,  welcoming the night .
