Prelude – 22 years has passed ever since Dil chahta hai was released. I was in 8th standard when I came across the song Kaisi Hai Yeh Rut Ki Jisme on MTV. I particularly remember the sequence when two dolphins jumped over the river, showing how nature was synchronised in the celebration of love. The character Sid, a painter in the film, observes nature and its love stories . Javed Akhthar's impeccable imagery brings out how love is the most sought after possession in the world. Javed Akhthar's lyrics bring out the vivid imagination of the painter from his palette of love .

How is this season when the heart blooms, becoming a flower ?

See ! This river is going to join its lover, the deep blue sea . It shows the universality of love

The birds , the river and the sea are all pilgrims travelling in this caravan of love

How do I tell someone and make them understand what love is ?

There are no bondages ,obstructions and barriers in love . Love can happen to anyone .

Postlude – Do age , complexion , financial and social background affect the way we love ? Love is not based on conditions and done in a calculative manner . The song explores the love Sid’s character feels for the character Tara , a middle-aged woman compared to him . Is it wrong to love a person who is considerably older than us in age ? Society has rules and regulations and a sense of morality connected with every action of human beings. But the heart is free and strange . When it skips a beat cannot be predicted. Maybe that’s why an old proverb says everything is fair in love and war.
